From his first memorable sip of Mosel at the age of six, Merus winemaker, David Lattin has been cultivating a keen palate and a passion for wine. Originally from Corvallis, Oregon, David received his bachelor degree in microbiology from Oregon State University in 1981. Soon after, he took his first position in the industry working for Acacia Winery. The environment and work inspired him beyond his expectations and he quickly fell in love with the business. Determined to gain experience, David traveled to Europe where he developed a profound appreciation for German and French wines. From the vineyards of St. Emilion to the cellar at Troplong-Mondot, David worked and studied the art and craft of winemaking before returning to the United States.
In 1986 David received his master’s degree in enology from the University of California, Davis. After university he was hired as enologist at Robert Pecota, where he further refined his technical and artistic capabilities before taking a hands-on position as cellar master at Storybook Mountain. In late 1987, David rejoined Acacia as enologist where he quickly made himself indispensable. Passionate and committed, David was promoted to winemaker in 1992, then to general manager/winemaker in 1997.
Resolved to maintain his relationship with both the wine and the vine, David left Acacia in 1998 after eleven years of dedicated service. Together with his wife Kendra, a trained enologist and landscape architect who has worked for several top California wineries, David founded CL Wines, a consulting and winemaking business.
In 2002 David started working at Kuleto Estate where he was given the title of head winemaker. He then stayed through the acquisition to Foley Family Wines and was then given the opportunity to be the head winemaker for Merus and Altvs in early 2013. When asked about his new role he stated:
“With Merus, I’ll be dealing with the five traditional Bordeaux varieties, sourced from five different growers and grown in 9 vineyard sites at the southern end of the Napa Valley. It’s a slightly different thing to coordinate farming and harvest logistics with contracted growers versus an in-house vineyard crew, but these farmers are all pros, and I hope to learn from them as I have over the years with the crew at Kuleto. I know that it isn’t too late to teach this old dog some new tricks. I’m excited to be working with these new vineyards and learning what it is that they have to say in terms of expression of flavor.”

David Ramey is known for seeking balance and harmony in wines under his care, and for striking results not only for his own winery, but for world renowned wineries like Chateau Petrus and recognizable California notables Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd. The common theme in all of these is often David Ramey Beginning with the 2013 vintage, he has added his skill as a member of the Merus winemaking team.
